Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard biological terror, but within Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
